Frequently asked questions

The questions families and therapists ask us most.

Is Anan really free?
Communicating with Anan is free forever — the boards, speaking, typing, switch access and “I need…” never cost anything and are never locked, even if a plan lapses. The carer & clinician toolset (usage insights, vocabulary editor, NDIS reporting, natural voices, encrypted backup) is a paid plan from A$6.99/week, with a 14-day free trial of those tools. The communicator’s side is never on a trial and never expires. With Anan, the voice itself is never behind a paywall.
Does Anan work offline?
Yes. After the first load it runs fully offline as an installable web app, so it keeps working with no internet — at home, in the car, or anywhere with no signal.
Is our data private?
Yes. By default everything — vocabulary, photos, voice recordings and usage insights — stays on your device, and using Anan as a communicator never needs an account. If a carer or clinician turns on optional account sync, it is end-to-end encrypted: the device encrypts everything before upload, so the server only ever holds an unreadable bundle it cannot decrypt. Nothing is ever sold, and nothing is shared for advertising. The one exception to “stays on your device” is the optional Natural Voices (online): when a carer switches it on, the text to be spoken is sent to our voice provider (ElevenLabs) to generate the audio. It is off by default, and the built-in voices work entirely on your device.
What devices does Anan work on?
Any device with a modern web browser: iPad, iPhone, Android phones and tablets, Chromebook, Windows and Mac. You can add it to the home screen so it opens full-screen like a normal app — no app store needed.
Can it be used with a switch or screen reader?
Yes. Anan includes switch scanning with auditory cues, plus keyboard and screen-reader support, so people with physical access needs can drive it independently.
Can we add our own words, photos and voices?
Yes. Caregivers and speech pathologists can add custom words and phrases, personal photos and recorded voices, and set up multiple user profiles — all stored on the device.
Does Anan help with NDIS reports?
Yes. Anan can build a usage summary — on the device — that you can share with your planner, support coordinator or therapist. It is a helpful record, not a substitute for clinical assessment, and any recommendation is written by the treating clinician. Communicating with Anan is free; talk to your NDIS planner about funding for a device or the carer toolset if you need them.
Is Anan a medical device or a replacement for a speech pathologist?
No. Anan is an accessibility and co-design tool, best used under speech-pathology governance — not a registered medical device or a substitute for assessment. The communicator’s own voice is never gated.

Ready to give it a go?

Free for the communicator, works offline, private on the device. Best set up with the communicator and their speech pathologist.
